This review of THE DARK ONE is actually based on reading it in the anthology, Dark Side (originally published in 2007). Pricing may seem a bit steep for only 40 pages (*cough*check publisher*cough*) but this is sooo much better than most erotic short stories available these days. Trust me, you'll get your money's worth.
Deliciously well-written story (re-read several times over the years ^_^), and definitely darker/edgier than AK's Mageverse books. Due to its length, the storyline is basic but solid. And I really liked how AK portrayed the relationship between Matia and Kaska--mutual respect and sweet at its core--which developed over several months as they fought side by side and platonically shared a tent.
Of course, Kaska had ulterior motives but he patiently bided his time. And once the time was right and he made his move? Oh my... *fans self*... that's when the reeeeaaallly sexy bits come in. (But warning! Not so sexy if one prefers vanilla or vanilla w/ sprinkles!)
Highly recommended for those who like alternate/fantasy setting reminiscent of ancient times (hello! look at the cover) with non-con/dub-con, BDSM practices worked into culture/religion, and HEA (again, look at the cover--don't they look happy?). What more could one ask for in a quick read?
Worst book of hers I've read.
A strong hero that doesn't jump on her, a strong heroine that chooses to submit. The bonds just make her feel hotter. Wow, if only it had been longer and had companion books. I am not sure about the talking idol but I can ignore that.
This was a very sexy read but a little too dark for my taste. Lots of emphasis on S & M, a female knights Templar cult versus a "dark god" religion, rape and so on. Not much humor compared to most of her stories.
